Kalamkari Stools
This fabric is hand-dyed by Vasant Chitara and his family in Ahmedabad, India. For seven generations his family has been creating Mata ni Pachedi and they are also the last to be producing it. Mata ni Pachedi is an elaborate artform using the kalamkari process where a bamboo stick is used to apply natural pigments to the cotton cloth. These pigments are derived from various plants and minerals including tamarind and iron. The process is both fascinating and time-consuming. Mata ni pachedi means “behind the mother goddess”, and is a cloth that constitutes a temple of the goddess. It would not be proper to sit on the temple of the goddess, so Chris and Chitara collaborated to create the designs used on these stools.
